King Amadeo of Spain abdicated on February 11, 1873, thus beginning Spain's first attempt to form a republican government. The republic lasted 35 months until December 29, 1875. The period was one of turmoil with leadership of the republic changing four times. Alfonso XII, son of Queen Isabella II, returned to Spain in 1876, and re-established a constitutional monarchy.
